The Sabakukan dojo of

(Sakugawa Koshiki Shorinji-Ryu Karate-Do)

on UCSD campus in La Jolla, CA

Welcome to the Sabakukan website. "Sabaku" means desert, and "kan" means hall. This dojo is thus named the "Desert Hall" of training. This nomenclature references the nearby environments and draws parallels between some aspects of karatedo and the peacefulness, difficulty, and austere beauty of the desert.

Shorinji-Ryu Karatedo is a classical style of Japanese karate. It is a comprehensive martial art that teaches punching, kicking, blocking, striking, grappling, throwing, choking, and immobilizing, as well as the use of Okinawan kobudo weapons such as the bo, sai, and tonfa. Study in Shorinji-Ryu includes formalized exercises called kata. Shorinji-Ryu is great exercise and fun and better prepares you for all aspects of life and its challenges. The art strives for the maintenance of peace through the avoidance and diffusion of conflict but teaches very real and effective techniques should physical protection be unavoidable. Shorinji-Ryu teaches a philosophy of non-violence and emphasizes the development of emotional maturity and sound moral character.

Classes are free of charge and are open to all UCSD students, staff, and faculty (and their relatives). Local instruction is provided by Randy Brooks, sandan, Suzi Brooks, nidan, and three Shodan sempai. The local school operates under the supervision of Kyoshi Thomas Cauley, 8th degree black belt and international director of Sakugawa Koshiki Shorinji-Ryu Karatedo. Rankings of students and instructors are recognized by the Japanese Ministry of Education through the Japan Karatedo Federation and the Zen Tohoku Karatedo Kempo Kumiai (All Northern Japan Karatedo and Kempo Union).
